It’s either ironic or humbling to live over 5 decades and then finally realize a specific word that captures a true love in your life.

I woke up at 3:00 am remembering some moments of childhood and decided to start the Keurig and capture.

I thought of Aesop’s Fables and how I poured over those as a child. I recollected the hours in my room over printed lyrics and the albums with my record player. I fell in love with the Beatles and their lyrics at age 8. I see the ‘famous book of quotes’ from my parents lined next to a Barbie dream house. (I also had joke books, Readers). Heck, I even remembering reading the dictionary and loving it. Yes, guilty and proud to be rather dorky. My mind moves to the sculpture gardens at UCLA where I drank in Donne, Keats, Byron, Milton, and more Greats. Then the 1990s slam poetry movement, which was half good and half embarrassment for me.

Then finally becoming a student of the Bible and other spiritual works from Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, Spurgeon. In Proverbs, the amount of short, impactful wisdom is sometimes mind-blowing. Precepts, historical figure quotes, funny quips, good fortune cookie one-liners, random 2nd and 3rd Webster definitions. I love it all.

Then finally. A word of the day provided more illumination — Atticism.

There it was. Attic Greek. “A witty or well-turned phrase.” 16th century.

My thoughts turn to our 20th century Atticus. The noble and moral character from Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. Perhaps that name is a derivative.

The Atticus origin is Latin derived meaning ‘belonging to Attica’, Athenian. Atticus was also a Roman Senator who taught Marcus Aurelius. The name emits literally sophistication and culture.

Suddenly my fun and silly desire for ‘women, wit, and wisdom’ makes sense. And why I keep just ‘writing’ or scribbling or scratching, and fiddling with my keyboard. Whatever you may call it. Thoughts and words are where I love to live. I enjoy sharing them.

Now, if only I could do this every day. And make a fortune…cookie.

Be well,

C. Nor
